Professor Dumbledore sighed as he looked at the pile of letters in front of him, each from a different Member of staff all telling him that they had been mysteriously confined to their beds by a bad case of wizards flu. Well he couldn’t very well cancel the school year, he would just have to teach the lessons himself, everyone at the same time, the same lesson, in the great hall. But what should he teach, in exasperation he looked around his office and two books caught his eye. They were special editions of Quiddicth Through the ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them, for which he had written the foreword. He walked over and picked them up, deciding to start easy he began to plan the lessons.
~*~*~
Dumbledore walked into the Great Hall on Monday morning to find as expected all the students were waiting for him. He reached the top table and placed his owns copies of the books on the eagle lecturn, which spread its wings as he reached it to allow him to do so. He stood there at the front of the hall waiting for quiet, and as usual it didn’t take long.
“Good morning everyone, I hope you all slept well. As you can see you have no class schedules, and I am here to explain why. Unfortunately we have a lack Professors this year due to Wizard’s flu, but I will attempt to teach you something that you will hopefully find useful in their stead, we will start with working from Fantastic Beasts and where to find them, and alternate that with Quidditch through the ages.” He paused to look at the reaction he was getting from his students, there was a mixture of expressions among them, and this too was expected.
“We will also progress into one of my favourite subjects, music, for which I will be enlisting some outside help. I have decided to start you off gently to ease you back into your learning after your long summer break, and also get the boring bits out of the way first, and so, we begin.”
Dumbledore waved his wand and a Giant Blackboard appeared behind him, another flick and the chalk he had brought with him picked itself up off the lectern and began to write on the blackboard in large sweeping script:
‘Lesson 1:
Flobberworms and Horklumps. MOM classification X (Boring)’
“If you could all please turn to the correct page for Flobberworms, I will then select someone to read aloud from the textbook.” Dumbledore glanced around the room for moment, “Mister Kaine, if you would please do the honours.”

Atticus groaned as his name was called he was so bored he hated care of magical creatures thats why he had never taken it as an elective
Standing up Atticus found the passage and began to read "'The Flobberworm lives in damp ditches. A Thick brown worm reaching up to ten inches in length. The Flobberworm moves very little. One end is indistinguishable from the other, both producing the mucus from which it's name is derived and which is sometimes used to thicken potions. The Flobberworm's preferred food is lettuce, although it will eat almost any vegetation."
Sitting down after reading it Atticus let his head slide onto the table in absolute boredom

He watched Atticus stand up and read the passage in a very uninterested way, then sit down, and let his head slide onto the table. "Thank you Mr Kaine. Horklumps, Miss Alear if you could read that passage for us." he looked across the the Hufflepuff table and smiled at her encouragingly.

Care of Magical Creatures. Certainly not the worst class, but also not her favorite. Although, if she had to choose an easy class to start the year with, she'd agree with Professor Dumbledore on Magical Creatures. Emmy listened, tired and distracted by the light playing over the wood tabletop. She'd learned these things through her brother's copy of the book, so paying strict attention wasn't a priority for her.
But her name was called to read the next passage and she had to pay attention now. Standing up, she read the next passage. "The Horklump comes from Scandinavia but is now widespread throughout northern Europe. It resembles a fleshy pinkish mushroom covered in sparse, wiry bristles. A prodigious breeder, the Horklump will cover an average garden in a matter of days. It spreads sinewy tentacles rather than roots into the group to search for it’s preferred food of earthworms. The Horklump is a favourite delicacy of Gnomes, but otherwise has no discernable use."
Emmy's tone thankfully managed to mask her boredom at relearning information she already knew. She folded her hands neatly on her lap again when she sat down.

"Thank you Miss Alear," said Dumbledore smiling across the room at her, and them glancing around at the rest of the students, who all looked extremely bored, as was he.
"Boring bit over I think, I would like to assign each of you a creature from the Ministry of Magic Classification XX, to produce an essay for next week to include a definition of the classification XX and information on your given magical creature. If you could come up and sign your names next to the Creature you would like to study so that I know what to expect that would be wonderful. Next time we will be studying Quidditch, so make sure you have your copies of Quidditch through the ages ready for then. Thank you."
Dumbledore flicked his wand at the Blackboard and a list appeared.
Augury Bowtruckle Chizpurfle Clabbert Diricrawl Fairy Ghoul Gnome Grindylow Imp Jobberknoll Mooncalf Porlock Puffskein Ramora
He stood at the lectern watching as the student filed up to the board to assign themselves a creature.
OOC - this thread will close on the 16th Jan at 22.00 GMT, any student who has not posted will be counted as not attending and will recieve house points. Thank you.

Sirius entered the room and sat at the Gryffindor table waiting for professor Dumbledore to begin the lesson. As he sat he glanced around at the other students, they were all quieter than they had been the night before.
He listened as Dumbledore spoke to them, and then as Kaine and a cute Hufflepuff read from the textbook. He glanced up at the board as Dumbledore added the list to it and sighed. He stood up and walked up to it, taking in the list as he did so.
Hr scribbled his name next to Grindylow and left the hall with the throng of people heading back to their houses.

Thomas sat at the table with the rest of the Slytherins pretending to be paying attention, in truth his eyes were glassy and unfocused and if Professor Dumbledore had taken the time to look at him more closely he would have seen this. At least he wasn't showing his boredom by falling asleep on the desk as Atticus did across from him.
When they were told to write their names next to a creature Thomas stood and walked calmly to the board thankfully one of the first there and wrote his name next to 'Ghoul', silently very pleased he hadn't been stuck with doing Fairys, and left the hall to walk back to the dungeons with the rest of the slytherins.
Thinking back it had been a nice first lesson, one where they could all fall asleep because it wasn't too taxing, but he for one looked forward to the next lesson. Quidditch was far more interesting than Flobberworms and Horklumps.

Emmy was glad for the end of the lesson, though she kept her face clean enough for the Professor not to notice. Picking up her things, she tucked them neatly into her bag with the promise to drop it off at the dorm and head up to the astronomy tower. Her things safely put away, she made her way to the board and signed her name next to Mooncalf.
School work done, Emmy half walked, half skipped out the door in her chippy manner.

Atticus stood up and strolled towards the bored his head hung low he was so unbelievably bored and the news that the next lesson was about quidditich had just made his day worse.
As he reached the bored he looked down the least and picked one at random signing his name next to Clabbert. Turning on the spot he whipped his robes round behind him and started strolling out the hall quickly maybe he would just skip the next lesson specially if it was going to be as useless as this one

Simanus had let Dumbledore's speech wash over her. Once he had finished she went to the board and saw that Augury was still available and quickly signed her name. She had hoped to meet with Dumbledore and exchange some of what she normally referred to as "banal pleasantries." With Dumbledore she enjoyed idle chit-chat in a way she didn't with others.
Anti-sociality wasn't in her nature, but she enjoyed social intercourse and found the stop-and-chat to be a defacement of human social skills; Dumbledore had a way of making the whole "How's your mum? Did you manage to up your bowling score over the summer?" routine enjoyable. Between this ability and the friendliness with which he had welcomed her first as an exchange and then as a permanent student, she had grown fond of him. He seemed to have gone, though and so she resigned herself to waiting. The skip in her step undiminished by this mild disappointment; she turned and headed off to look for an empty classroom, it was time for an experiment.
