He grinned at her. "Maybe I should borrow that walkman for when I'm in History of Magic? Anything is better than listening to professor Binns droning on." He looked down, as she placed her hand on his arm and raised an eyebrow at her. He sighed at her words. "I don't think she'll ever notice me, even if I do call her Lily." He felt the colour rise to his cheeks and looked back down at his feet. "She will just think I'm up to something if I call her Lily, but I will give it a go."
His head snapped up, when she admitted that she could have been put in Slytherin. He shouldn't have been shocked, knowing Sirius came from a long line of Slytherins, but hearing her admit that she could have been placed in the house, seemed to unreal to him. "But you weren't, you were put in the right house. You're intelligent, and quick witted. You are more a Ravenclaw than Slytherin. The sorting hat would have seen this in you."
He sat up in his seat and gazed at her, as she spoke of a future that could happen for her. "Jaimi, the future isn't yet written. Things change, and its up to us to make those changes for the better." He smiled. "You won't always be powerless to your father's demands, you will be old enough to make your own decisions and your own choices. Regardless of what others may have planned for you, you can always say no."
He looked out over the Quidditch pitch and ran his hand through his hair, making it look more windswept then it already was. The sun peeked out from behind a cloud, and he smiled to himself. "I know I'm going to marry Lily one day, even if she hates me now, she won't forever. You mark my words. I make my own future."

"But the question is would it keep you awake or send you to sleep more?" she said. "I'm not going to encourage sleeping in class you know." She sighed, "One day James, she'll look back and wonder why she ever hated you, then you'll annoy her and she'll remember, but it wont change the fact that, for a moment, she forgot, and that will be enough. You could always try easing her into the idea, make it a slow transition."
She saw his shock at her admittance of her suitability for being in Slytherin, and wasn't surprised. The hat had considered how she would fare in all the houses before making it's decision, told her should would have been a welcome addition to any, but that Ravenclaw would have the best chance of helping her become the witch she wanted to be. "Apparently the sorting hat thought that too, but it doesn't change the fact that every descendant of my family who has ever been to Hogwarts has been in Slytherin, except me. Don't you see why that scares me. I didn't go into the great hall for breakfast for weeks because I was scared of getting a Howler about it."
"I know it's not, but that doesn't mean I feel like I can control it. Everything is happening so fast and I don't feel like I've had the chance to question any of it. If it was up to me I'd still be at Beauxbatons, but no one thought to ask, it just happened. Maybe I just need to be more on the ball about saying no. Hang the consequences. Standing up to my father like that is going to take time to work up to I think."
She smiled across at him, glad he at least knew what he wanted. "That's a pretty firm goal." Lily may not see it, but James really was 100% in love. He may not know how to show it, due to his age or whatever but, call it Veela intuition, it was there.

He looked suitably offended, at her suggestion that the walkman would encourage him to sleep in class. "Why it would keep me awake of course. I don't know where you get these ideas about me, I really don't." He shook his head sorrowfully with a distintive gleam in his eyes.
He sighed at her comments about Lily. "Do you think you could maybe give me some pointers on what to do?" He asked tentatively. "Sirius would just tell me to do something to make it look like I'm showing off or something."
He listened as she explained about how she was the only one in her family to be placed in Slytherin. "Yes, but Sirius was just the same. The hat saw something in him, that made it place him in Gryffindor. His mother obliterated him from the family tree, she was so angry." He smiled, "but then you probably know all that."
He shrugged about he standing up to her father. "I dunno, he sounds quite a force to be reckoned with." He smiled and looked at her. "If you had stayed at Beauxbatons, we would never have become friends, or you wouldn't have got with Remus." He winked.

Jaimi laughed. "I would have thought that was obvious James, I'm dating one of your best friends." She said with a hint of fake frustration.
"Well showing off clearly isn't working is it. Try and be a little less up yourself around her I guess." She shrugged. Lily was like many other girls, less affected by the marauders than they seemed to think, Jaimi at least could claim that she liked the one with a more level head.
Jaimi modded in confirmation, "I've heard all about it." She replied with a seriousness to her tone of voice. She had been worried that her father would have been similarly angry, but apparently her mother had calmed him out of it. She could almost imagine the conversation.
"Come now Rufus, Ravenclaw is a very respectable house."
"But it's not Slytherin is it! Every descendant of my family has been in Slytherin since anybody can remember."
"At least it's not Gryffindor like that Black boy. Poor Walburga. I wasn't in Slytherin."
"But you aren't a descendant of the family, you are one of us by marriage, not by blood."
"Like I could forget."...
"That he is..." She said quietly, almost to herself as she subconsciously stroked an index finger down the scar on her cheek. "This is true, but I would get to see my Grandmother, I do miss her, and my friends there. We write, but it's not the same. Don't get me wrong, I Love Hogwarts. It's nice to see Sirius more often, and I've got you guys as friends, and obviously meeting Remus. But it will always be an exampl of how my life isn't truly under my own control."

He chuckled heartily at her obvious knowledge of what he was like. He would have to speak to dear old Moony, about what he confides to Jaimi.
"I know , but I can't seem to help being that way around her. I just seem to do it without thinking." He sighed. He knew Lily didn't like his arrogance, as she often told him, in his eyes though it at least got a reaction from her, and even if it was rebuffing him, she was at least talking to him. He sighed. "I'll try though, if you think it will help."
He sat quietly thoughtful, as she became serious. He knew how not being able to heep an eye on Regulus, was affecting Sirius, and though he was glad he wasn't in Slytherin, he wished that Regulus had been placed in Gryffindor with him. He looked at her as she spoke quietly, and stroked a scar, that he hadn't noticed before now, on her cheek. He smiled at her next words. "Maybe you could visit your Gran and friends during the holidays?" He offered good naturedly. "I mean we would all miss you, but if your Mother would let you go, we will put up with not seeing you in the holidays, if you were happier with seeing her."
James smiled and wondered why he couldn't find it this easy to be around Lily. He would have no worries, if they could sit in each others company for more then a minute, without harsh words being said.

"No offense meant James, but it's because of your age." she said with an indulgent smile. "Girls accept that guys just are complete idiots for a few years, maybe just stop trying so hard." she suggested kindly.
"I guess it's an option." she said thoughtfully, "The only problem is that part of the reason I'm not at Beauxbatons anymore is because she 'couldn't cope with looking after me for two months out of three every summer'. Which is absolute Chimera poo by the way." She looked across at James and realised he had turned suddenly thoughtful and pensive.
"Penny for your thoughts?" She said, quoting the old muggle saying.

He nodded his head at her suggestion to maybe stop trying so hard, and grinned at the observation that boys at a certain age were idiots. "Yeah, well it's common knowledge that girl mature faster than boys." He retorted with a cheeky grin. "And no offence taken."
He sighed at what she said about her Grandmother. "Hmm...I don't know? Maybe just go for a couple of weeks then? She may find that not having you around so much now, that she will have more time for you."
He smiled at her enquiry into what he was thinking. "Oh nothing really, I was just thinking how much easier it is to talk to you, than it is to Lily." He scratched the back of his neck absent mindedly "I mean, like we are holding a proper conversation, and not once have you called me an arrogant half wit." He smiled.

Jaimi grinned back at him. "That we do."
"It was just my Father's excuse to get me where he could keep moreof an eye on me. Not that Professor Dumbledore would tell him anything." she sighed. "I'll just do things the other way around during the summer, stay at hers for the bit in the middle of the summer instead of the bits at either end."
She watched him as he awkwardly tried to explain what was on his mind. "That's because you haven't acted like one. You've just been you, normal and kind." she put a hand on his arm. "She'll see it, one day. you've just got to choose the right time to show it to her."

James listened as she told him about her fathers reasons for bringing her back to attend Hogwarts. It made him realise how lucky he was, his parents let him have his own way, he didn't have to fight for anything. "I wouldn't have thought Professor Dumbledore would be in anyone's pocket like that, but then again he's a complexed character." He smiled.
He ruffled his hair and shrugged. "I suppose I haven't been like I would with Lily, but no offence Jaimi, I don't worship the ground you walk on." He grinned. "Anyway, I hope you feel a little better now? And if you have any more trouble with slimy Slytherins, you come and call on one of the Marauders. We'll make sure you're alright." He slapped her lightly on the back of her shoulder.

"He's not in my father's pocket, which is exactly why he wouldn't say anything no matter how much my father asked." She smiled. "Maybe that's the problem."
She stood, and gathered her things together. "Yeah I do, thanks James. I'd better get going, I've got homework to finish." She jumped over the row of seats in front of them, walked across to the stairs and than started running down them. "See you later, tell the others I said 'Hi!'." She called over her shoulder when she was halfway down. She was glad she'd seen someone she could talk to after her encounter with that Jacobs boy. She supposed she'd have to talk to Atticus about it and make sure she'd be safe. True the Marauders were looking out for her, but that was no reason not to tackle the problem on both fronts.
