Sirius was lying in the middle of the quidditch pitch, looking up at the swirling clouds overhead, trying to decide whether or not it was worth getting on his broomstick to practise. James had been made a chaser last year, but Sirius had been beaten out by a couple of people in older years, one of whom had left so he had high hopes for this year.
However, at this very moment in time he wasn't feeling so great about it, he still couldn't get over the fact that his brother had been placed in Slytherin in accordance with family tradition. He knew his brother needed to be accepted, and that was where they differed the most, he didn't need his parents acceptance, Regulus clearly did. Sirius had chosen not to be in Slytherin, and the hat had then placed him in Gryffindor, it wasn't his fault he hated snakes, and pureblood mania.
All the muggleborns he'd met were really nice, and there were quite a few in Ravenclaw, personally he couldn't see what the problem was. Wizards hadn't been around forever surely, they'd have had to all be muggleborns at some point...
But his parents didn't see it like that and he doubted they ever would. He could feel the dampness of the grass seeping through his robes and decided that if he was going to get on his broom now was the time to do it.
He picked up the beaters bat he had borrowed from the spares cupboard and swung it around his head experimentally to find out where he would be able to grip it best. His mother had confiscated his over the summer and he hadn't had a chance to either ask for it back or buy a new one. He was so absorbed in practising his grip in either hand that he didn't notice someone else walk onto the pitch.

A broom. A new broom of her very own. Emmy was ecstatic over the gift. The week before school she had been with her brother, staying in the Leaky Cauldron, so she could get her school books and the two could catch up before heading off to their separate destinations. On the sly, Emmy had made a comment of wanting to get a new broom for the coming year. Her brother had taken it as a cue to go out and get her one. To replace my old one you got, he had said.
Now Emmy was eager to try it out. By the time she reached the pitch, the dampness in the ground had seeped through her thin shoes. At least it wasn't muddy. While not the worse thing in the world, Emmy would avoid walking through the stuff if she could.
Stepping on the pitch, Emmy was surprised to find someone else there already. She had expected she'd be the only person looking for a flight. But she was pleased to have some company. "Mind if I join you?" she called out to the other person.

He looked across at where the sudden voice came from, and shrugged casually, smiling at her. He thought he recognised her from Herbology last year, she was a Hufflepuff, and her name definately began with an 'E' but they hadn't spoken before.
"Not at all," he said grabbing his broom, "I'm just practising for try outs." he climbed on to his broom and kicked off, the ground feeling slightly soft underneath his feet as he did so. He balanced on his broom and started flipping the beaters bat between his hands. In this game there was a definite advantage to being somewhat ambidextrous.

Emmy didn't recognize the person, but smiled back anyways. While flying alone was fun, for the thrill of being in the air, having someone to talk to while flying was equally as fun. She watched as he mounted his broom, bat in hand, and quickly joined him in the air. The ground squished under her toes as she pushed off from the ground. Any discomfort by the mud was quickly replaced with the exhilarating feeling of flight.
"Beater, huh?" she asked, eying the bat he was tossing between his hands. It was a fun position, her brother's favorite, but it wasn't for her; she lacked the strength necessary to hit the ball far enough away from her teammates to be successful. If Emmy decided to try out for the Quidditch team it would be as a chaser or a seeker, both requiring some amount of coordination and speed without a large amount of strength.

"Yep." he said with a smile as she flew up to join him. He loved being a beater, it was a nice way to release your anger, or so his father had always told him. He'd always been fascinated by the position and apparently his muscles had developed to accommodate his wish to play the position.
"Do you play?" he asked casually. "I don't recognise you from any of the house teams. But you;re a Hufflepuff, right? I think I recognise you from Herbology last year." he said looking at her curiously.

Emmy shrugged with a mischievous smile. "Do I play. Hah!" She crouched over her broom and wrapped her ankles on top for security, the position she usually took for speed. "I was born to fly after a tiny, flying gold ball." With a light laugh she straightened up. "I don't play on the house team yet, but I'm hoping to this year." Finally, someone who seemed to enjoy flying as much as she did, someone as determined to play as she was.
Emmy nodded in response to his second question. "I think I remember you, too. Didn't you try to convince a first year that Devil's Snare would make a perfect bracelet? Or was that someone else?" Again, she laughed. Even if it wasn't him, the thought was still amusing.
She steered her broom over to the boy and stuck out her hand. "The name's Emmy. Emmy Alear."

Sirius laughed a loud bark like laugh, and smiled at the memory.
"Probably, that sounds like something we would have done." he watched as she repositioned herself slightly on her broom. "Ahh, a seeker I see, well good luck, I think you'll be competing with last years seeker, but you look fast so we'll see." he said with a mischievous grin. "The only other thing you have to learn to do as a seeker is dodge bludgers really quickly." he flipped his bat over a full turn and caught it deftly in the same hand.
"I'm Sirius, Sirius Black."

Emmy looked over at the boy, Sirius, with a twinkle in her eye as he mentioned the bludgers. "Well, that's what I'm depending on people like you for," she replied with a simple smile. In a way, she was actually being flirtatious, or attempting to be. She'd never really done it before. But for the most part, it was truly just Emmy being nice and making a comment.
"Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Black."

Sirius grinned, "True, but we can't always get there in time, you need to have three sets of eyes. One to look for the snitch, one to watch out for bludgers and one to keep an eye on the score, you don't want your team to lose because you caught the snitch at the wrong time." Was Emmy flirting with him a little? If she was, he could deal with that, two could definitely play at the game, and so he would.
"Believe me, the pleasure's all mine."

Emmy laughed, shaking her head in an amused manner. “Now, then, I’d look awfully funny if I had three eyes, now wouldn’t I?” she asked. She knew the ins and outs of Quidditch. The score was little to worry about, she knew to watch the score and listen for her teams cheering cries of points. With that, Emmy stretched out over the end of her broom and rested her cheek on her hands, folded neatly over the handle. She sighed contentedly.

Sirius laughed, "very true." he said as he watched her lie forward on her broom. "But we humans aren't perfect are we." It was more of a statement then a question. He looped the writs strap of his bat around the end of his broom, and swung his leg over to face away from Emmy.
He relaxed and slid backwards until his knees were hooked over the handle and them let his body flop backwards so that he was hanging upside down by his knees. "So apart from flying, what do you do with your spare time?" he asked, squeezing the broom handle with the back of his left knee and lifting his right slightly so that the broom rose slowly, bringing his head to the same height as hers.

Emmy chuckled at the comment. "You speak words of wisdom there," she complimented. She watched as he shifted on his broom till he was hanging upside down from the handle by his knees. He flew rather well for using only his legs like that. The girl raised a brow at him as he came level to her, eye to eye... sort of.
"I like working with my hands," she responded. "I sculpt a lot. Mostly I fly. I go running every day. I enjoy sitting by the water." Emmy smiled lightly at the boy and shifted slightly on the broom to ease the tension on her legs. "So what do you do for fun besides this and blowing things up?"

"I'm glad my genius is appreciated by someone." he said flashing her a grin. She looked funny upside down, well everyone looked funny upside down.
Sirius thought for a moment, there wasn't really a lot that he did apart from pranking. "Well, pranking and hanging out with my friends is about it really. I mean we make a habit of sneaking into Hogesmeade regularly, just to keep the sneaking skills up to scratch you know." he guided the broom to glide slowly round her, showing off a little. Well quite a lot, he used to annoy his brother when he did this because he couldn't do it.

Emmy sat back up, shaking her head at Sirius's obvious cockiness. She watched as he flew in a circle around her, laughing at his obvious attempt of showcasing himself. "I didn't picture you as the bad boy kind," she responded to his comments of sneaking to Hogsmeade. "You do know we're allowed to go there, right?"

She had a nice laugh, thought Sirius as he continued to circle her. It was soft and fruity, like a nice wine. This girl could shatter the illusion that all Hufflepuffs were idiots quite easily, and Sirius would enjoy letting her.
"Did you not?" he asked, raising his eyebrows. "Well, I'm glad to have shattered your illusion. We only get a Hogesmeade weekend once every couple of months you know. Besides, I've been going since first year, and you only get the slip with your third year letter." he smiled "Plus it's more fun with the risk of getting caught."
